The ESCP Master in ManagementImpact Entrepreneurship Option-E specialisation offers its students a transformative learning experience, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in the dynamic world of entrepreneurship. As part of their academic journey, students embarked on a stimulating field trip to Catania, Sicily’s economic hub. The students had the privilege of immersing themselves in Catania’s vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem. Isola Catania, a thriving innovation hub, served as their base for exploration and discovery.

Have you ever thought about setting up your business in the Etna Valley?

Catania is a contradictory city with a strong identity but also fragility, which offers clues and opportunities to imagine new actions and generative projects for the territory. It is a place where history meets entrepreneurship and where entrepreneurs are deeply embedded in the local community.

We chose to be here in Catania to explore the entrepreneurial ecosystem, because we want to understand how it is possible to create this very active and fertile environment to support Innovation and Entrepreneurship,” said Alisa Sydow, Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at ESCP Business School. “Catania has not only the sea, nature, good food and beauty, but also a complex ecosystem to get to know and study,” – continued Alisa Sydow. “This is the challenge for these young students who come from very different backgrounds where there is often a surplus of accelerators, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Here in Catania, many of these things are lacking, so it is even more stimulating to study, deepen and get to know the area to create something that generates impact and opportunities for the local community as well“.

From the moment they set foot in Catania, the students were captivated by the city’s unique blend of history, culture and entrepreneurial spirit.

Startup ecosystem

As the students delved deeper into the local ecosystem, they were introduced to a variety of startups, young companies and innovation hubs that exemplify Catania’s entrepreneurial prowess.

One of the highlights of their visit was the opportunity to interact with industry leaders and innovators.

They had the great opportunity to meet Enrica Arena, founder of Orange Fiber s.r.l., Corrado Paternò Castello; founder of Boniviri, Flavio Tutino of M2D Technologies; and the great community of Isola Catania, founded by Antonio Perdichizzi. The ESCP students were grateful for the warm welcome and willingness of these entrepreneurs and organisations, such as Enel Innovation Hub&Lab, Officine Culturali and Palazzo Biscari, to share their insights and forge links with the next generation of entrepreneurs. These interactions provided invaluable first-hand knowledge of the challenges and achievements faced by entrepreneurial ventures and inspired the students to propose concrete actions to promote entrepreneurship in Catania further.

Isola Catania

Isola Catania has emerged as a true gem in the city’s entrepreneurial landscape. This coworking, innovation, and education hub became a home away from home for ESCP students during their stay. The vibrant atmosphere and close-knit community fostered collaboration, creativity, and the exchange of ideas. The students found themselves surrounded by like-minded individuals who shared their passion for entrepreneurship, creating an environment that encouraged growth and exploration.

Amaury Lescure, a Master in Management Option E student, said: “This experience is an opportunity to see how entrepreneurship works and also to discover new perspectives for a city. I am really interested in entrepreneurship, starting a project from scratch that has a good impact on all of us. There is a very special atmosphere here, and that is the thing that struck me the most. You can feel a really strong community“.

Outcome

Catania’s entrepreneurial ecosystem left a lasting impression on the students, who were amazed by the community’s support for startups and their drive to succeed.

As the ESCP Master in Management – Impact Entrepreneurship Option-E students bid farewell to Catania, they left with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. Their time in the city broadened their horizons and deepened their appreciation for the power of entrepreneurship to drive positive change.

Armed with knowledge and contacts, these budding entrepreneurs are ready to make a lasting impact in the ever-changing business world.
